Mediator Trainings

The Dispute Resolution Center offers mediator trainings throughout the year. Specifically we offer general civil and private practice trainings, advanced trainings, and workshops applicable to effective mediation. Topics include: peer mediation, conflict management, and restorative practices. We offer Michigan Supreme Court approved training for: 40-hour General Civil Mediator and 40-hour Community Mediator.

About

A mediator is a neutral third party who can help people in conflict find solutions and come to agreement. Mediators learn skills which can be used in personal relationships and professional situations. Participants will learn:

  • Different kinds of conflict
  • Getting past: “you’re wrong…I’m right”
  • Effective listening and recognizing non-verbal communication
  • Balancing power
  • Using neutral language to express different points of view
  • Cultural and gender issues in mediation
  • Dealing with strong emotions
  • Finding “win-win” solutions
  • Writing agreements that work
  • How to become a volunteer mediator

When

Week 1 // March 29-31, 2019
March 29 & 30 from 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM
March 31 from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM.

Week 2 // April 12-14, 2019
April 12 & April 13 from 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM
April 14 from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM.

Participants must attend all days in order to receive certificate.

Who

Educators, social service providers, health care workers, law enforcement professionals, managers, supervisors, real estate agents and community members.
