48 HR Domestic Relations Mediation Training

• Week 2 – Tue Oct 27 – Fri Oct 30 – 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
• Week 3 – LAST DAY – Domestic Violence Screening Training – 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Approved by the State Court Administrative Office (SCAO), this training will teach you the skills necessary to mediate divorce and custody issues. Through activities, roleplays, and interactive exercises, this training will help you to develop impactful communication and conflict management skills.  And we will have a great time while we do it!  This training includes the 8-Hour Domestic Violence Screening Training.  Along with additional requirements, this training is necessary for applying for approval on county mediation rosters.

About the Trainers:

Tiffany Stanley

Ms. Stanley has been a certified mediator through the Michigan Supreme Court Administrative Office since 2015 when she began her work with mediation. Ms. Stanley’s prior career encompasses 20+ years in the fields of Human Resources, Operations, and Finance and has held her Professional in Human Resources certification since 2012. In addition to General Civil and Domestic mediation certifications, Ms. Stanley has completed specialized mediation skill trainings in Eldercare, Child Protective Services, Behavioral Health, Special Education, Adult and Minor Guardianship, and Abuse and Neglect mediation and facilitation. Ms. Stanley is also certified as a Restorative Practices Circle and Conference Facilitator as well as certified to train other facilitators in Restorative Practices through the International Institute for Restorative Practices. Ms. Stanley earned her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Alma College and her Master of Laws in Dispute Resolution from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Tiffany is one of a handful of Michigan mediation professionals who has earned the privilege of being a certified trainer of both General Civil Mediation and Domestic Relations Mediation, per MCR 2.411 and MCR 3.216 by the Michigan Supreme Court Administrative Office and the only one endorsed by NAFCM/JAMS Foundation. Tiffany has performed over 2500 mediations/coaching sessions and trained dozens of new mediators. Tiffany has been a coach for other SCAO certified trainers and has worked with local, state, and national organizations such as NAFCAM and Princeton University to develop trainings in de-escalation, workplace conflict, general conflict communication, and restorative practices.

Veronica Tobar-Thronson

Veronica Tobar Thronson is a Clinical Professor of Law & Director of the Immigration Law Clinic at Michigan State University College of Law in East Lansing, Michigan where she also teaches Domestic Violence Law, Family Law: Marriage & Divorce, and Immigration and Nationality Law. Thronson was a visiting professor at The Pennsylvania State University, Penn State Law for the 2023-2024 academic year, where she directed the Center for Immigrants Rights Clinic and taught Immigration Law. She served as overall Director of the MSU Law Clinic from 2017 to 2021. Thronson frequently conducts trainings for attorneys and judges and was appointed to the faculty of the National Judicial College in 2012. Since 2015 she has served as expert faculty with the National Immigrant Women’s Advocacy Project at American University Washington College of Laws National Judicial Network and Family Law Attorneys Community of Practice.

From 2002 to 2010, Thronson was the Directing Attorney of the Domestic Violence Project at the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada where she practiced in the areas of family and immigration law. She also taught Community Property at the William S. Boyd School of Law at UNLV. Previously, Thronson served as the Director of Training and Legal Services at the New York Immigration Coalition, a non-profit umbrella advocacy organization for over 200 groups in New York that work with immigrants, refugees, and asylees. At the NYIC, Thronson developed community outreach materials and programs, and conducted training for advocates and attorneys on immigration and benefits laws and their impact on immigrant communities. She also appeared bi-weekly on an internationally broadcast program of Univision providing information on current immigration law, benefits law and immigrant-related topics and was a regular commentator for other local and national newspapers and radio programs on these topics.

Thronson has served on numerous boards and task forces. Currently, she is a core faculty member of the Michigan State University Research Consortium on Gender-Based Violence and the Michigan State University Center for Gender in Global Context, and Vice-Chair of the board of the National Immigrant Women’s Advocacy Project. Previously, she served on the Access to Justice Initiative and co-chaired the Domestic Violence Committee of the State Bar of Michigan. In addition, she is a Domestic Violence Screening Mediation Trainer approved by the Office of Dispute Resolution at the Michigan State Court Administrative Office.

The Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center honored Thronson as its Light of Liberty Attorney of the Year in 2024. In 2023, she was selected by the State Bar of Michigan for its prestigious Champion of Justice award. In 2020, Thronson received the Pro Bono Championship Award from the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Michigan Chapter for the work of the MSU Immigration Law Clinic. Michigan State University College of Law recognized her with its Donald F. Campbell Outstanding Teaching Award in 2019. Additionally, the Immigration Law Clinic received the Michigan State University Excellence in Diversity Award in 2015 and Thronson received the Michigan State University Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Award in 2014. In 2009 in Nevada, the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada recognized Thronson with the Louis Wiener Service Award, given to an advocate who has made substantial contributions in representing victims.

Thronson is a graduate of the City University of New York School of Law and is admitted to the practice of law in the states of New Jersey, New York, Nevada, and Michigan.
